World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day was first observed on December 1, 1988. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this event.
It is customary to wear a red awareness ribbon on World AIDS Day. The red ribbon symbolizes awareness of the impact that HIV/AIDS has on the international community and for compassion for those individuals living with HIV/AIDS. A conventional AIDS awareness ribbon is featured below:
HIV/AIDS Fast Facts:
- HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
- AIDS is a result of HIV infection.
- HIV is not transmitted through everyday casual contact.
- Only a physician is able to diagnose AIDS.
The most effective prevention from HIV infection is through education. Refraining from sex with an HIV infected person, the proper use of a latex/polyurethane condom and not sharing needles and/or syringes are also approved personal prevention practices.
PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis) marketed under the pharmaceutical name: Truvada, is a once-a-day pill that also is 90% effective in preventing the transmission of HIV from one person to another.
Make sure your sexual partner wears a condom!
Versatility matters, guys! Be cool!
